Nintendo DSi Firmware 1.4 released in Europe, Japan, and Australia

undefined

I called it! Yesterday, the DSi Browser was updated in Europe and Japan (and Ugoku Memo was updated in Japan). I predicted that this update was going to release alongside the DSi firmware update that Nintendo promised at E3, which would add the ability to post photos directly to Facebook. Well, as I predicted, firmware version 1.4 was released today for Europe, Japan, and Australia so far.

The new firmware adds Facebook Connect and makes the DSi Camera faster. It also happens to block all current flashcards that work on the DSi. It is possible that the flashcards can be updated to work on version 1.4, but for now this proves that Nintendo is taking action against flashcards. No word on a DSi System Update or DSi Browser update for the US yet. If I had to guess, I’d predict it will come on Monday alongside the rumored US release of Flipnote Studio. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Wii | Nintendo sales slide 40%, profits plummet 60%

Slowing hardware market, lack of hit new releases, currency fluctuation batter Mario maker's first fiscal quarter; worldwide Wii total tops 52 million.

Nintendo's successful strategy to expand the gaming audience with the Wii and the DS has accounted for much of the industry's growth over the past few years. So it should come as little surprise that when the industry as a whole suffers a multi-month malaise, it would be reflected in the console maker's sales figures.

Wario doesn't like the look of these numbers.

Nintendo today reported its financial results for its first fiscal quarter, the three months ended June 30, and the numbers weren't pretty. Nintendo's revenues were down a full 40 percent from ¥423 billion ($4.45 billion) to ¥253 billion ($2.66), while net profits were down a steep 60 percent, from ¥107 billion ($1.12 billion) to just ¥42 billion ($442 million).

The publisher attributed the slide to a number of factors. First of all, Nintendo said it was hurt by a weaker lineup of software titles. The company's previous first fiscal quarter saw the international releases of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii, compared to this year's first quarter slate headlined by the Japan-only debut of Wii Sports Resort. The DS couldn't pick up the slack, as Nintendo lamented that "there were few popular new titles," with Pokemon Platinum being the only game singled out for selling well during the quarter.

With no hit new games to sell the hardware, Nintendo also saw those figures drop significantly. For the quarter, Nintendo sold 2.23 million Wiis worldwide, just 43 percent of the 5.17 million it sold for the prior year's first quarter. The DS line of systems fared significantly better thanks to the international launch of the camera-equipped DSi, but still fell short of last year's mark. Consumers worldwide purchased 5.97 million DS systems over the quarter, down nearly 14 percent from 6.94 million sold in the previous first quarter. To date, Nintendo has sold 107.75 million DS systems worldwide, and 52.62 million Wiis.

Much like Sony explained its own disappointing financial figures today, Nintendo also pointed to foreign currency exchange rates. Despite the numbers, Nintendo did not change its financial forecast for the year.

Wii | Wii Fit, Sims 3 top console, PC games of '09Â…so far

ChartSpot: NPD's rankings of US game sales from January to June show EA's sim sequel edging out WOW expansion on PC charts with over 820K sold; Nintendo takes half of non-PC top 10.

Just under a week after it published a worse-than-expected US monthly game sales report, the NPD Group has released its top 10 best-seller charts for the year so far. The rankings were based on unit sales figures, which were themselves not made public--for the most part (see below).

Americans preferred limber Miis….

The leading industry-research group found that, in the first six months of 2009, Nintendo dominated the domestic non-PC games market, occupying six of the top 10 slots. Wii Fit came in first, followed by Pokemon Platinum (DS), the Wii Remote pack-in Wii Play, and Wii Mario Kart, which is bundled with the Wii wheel. The last two positions on the top 10 were taken by some venerable DS holdovers--New Super Mario Bros., released in May 2006, and Mario Kart DS, first released in November 2005.

Sandwiched between the Mii yoginis and pocket-sized plumbers were three Xbox 360 games--Capcom's Resident Evil 5 (fifth), THQ's UFC 2009 Undisputed (sixth), and Activision's 2008 hit Call of Duty: World at War (seventh). The sole PlayStation 3 title to crack the top 20 was the long-awaited--and critically praised--first-party shooter Killzone 2, which fought its way into eighth place.

On the PC charts--much like in the real world--Electronic Arts and Activision Blizzard fought it out for supremacy. From January to July, the former's Sims 3 was a double threat, with the regular edition being the top game and the $70 collector's edition coming in eighth. According to NPD, the game has sold over 820,000 units in June, the month it was released. Despite competing against its own sequel, The Sims 2: Double Deluxe was the six-month period's bronze-medal winner, with The Sims 2: Apartment Life expansion taking 10th place. EA also scored with Spore, the half-year's seventh-place PC title.

…and happy sims during the first half of 2009.

Activision Blizzard's showing wasn't too shabby, with the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King expansion coming in second, and the $40 World of Warcraft: Battle Chest Bundle--which consists of the original game and the Burning Crusade expansion--coming in fourth. The original World of Warcraft, which was released over four and a half years ago, remained a best seller in sixth place. Rounding out the top 10 US PC games from January to June were fifth-place finisher Empire: Total War from Sega and ninth-place game Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II from THQ.

TOP NON-PC US GAMES: JAN.-JUNE 2009 1) Wii Fit w/ Balance Board (Wii) - Nintendo 2) Pokemon Platinum (DS) - Nintendo 3) Wii Play w/ Remote (Wii) - Nintendo 4) Wii Mario Kart w/ Wheel (Wii) - Nintendo 5) Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360) - Capcom 6) UFC 2009 Undisputed (Xbox 360) - THQ 7) Call of Duty: World at War (Xbox 360) - Activision Blizzard 8) Killzone 2 (PlayStation 3) - SCEA 9) Mario Kart DS (DS) - Nintendo 10) New Super Mario Bros. (DS) - Nintendo

TOP PC US GAMES: JAN.-JUNE 2009 1) The Sims 3 - Electronic Arts 2) World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - Activision Blizzard 3) The Sims 2: Double Deluxe - Electronic Arts 4) World of Warcraft: Battle Chest - Activision Blizzard 5) Empire: Total War - Sega 6) World of Warcraft - Activision Blizzard 7) Spore - Electronic Arts 8) The Sims 3: Collector's Edition - Electronic Arts 9) Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - THQ 10) The Sims 2: Apartment Life - Electronic Arts

Good news: Wii Fit Plus to be cheap (hopefully)

Wii and Wii Fit News Post subject : Good news: Wii Fit Plus to be cheap (hopefully)IGN is reporting that Wii Fit Plus, the upcoming update to Wii Fit will cost just 2,000 Yen in Japan, that's about $21 or £13.That's only the game without the balance board of course, I fully expect that the full pack will be in the same price range as the current incarnation. This is good news for anyone who has been looking forward to the improved routines and more cardio fitness games that are promised for Wii Fit Plus. Many feared they might get stiffed on the price for an update that is largely fixing things that shouldn't have been broken in the first place.Of course, this is still all just a rumour, so keep your fingers crossed. more ... Wii | Big in Japan: Dragon Quest IX dominates charts

Square Enix RPG tops 2.3 million, pushes DSi sales to double previous week's total; Wii Sports Resort also hangs tough.

"Big in Japan" doesn't even begin to describe Square Enix's Dragon Quest series, a fact that was bolstered by Japanese industry tracker Media Create's latest retail sales charts for the week of July 6-12. As reported earlier this week, Dragon Quest IX sold through a staggering 2.3 million copies in its debut week.

All the sales of Madden to a population a fraction of the size.

To put that figure in perspective, in one week on sale in Japan, Dragon Quest IX sold more copies on a single platform than Madden NFL 09 sold in its debut month in the United States on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Wii, DS, and original Xbox combined, according to NPD figures. Even more remarkably, Japan's population is around one third that of the US.

The first installment in the series to debut on the DS crushed all competition for the week, outselling Nintendo's second-place Wii Sports Resort by a 22:1 ratio. Few publishers bothered to release games against the juggernaut, with the second-best new release of the week--Global A's PSP RPG Sekai wa Atashi de Mawatteru Hikari to Yami no Princess--ranking 46 on Media Create's top 50. One other new release, the Japanese PlayStation 3 edition of WWE: Legends of Wrestlemani, managed to sneak just inside the top 50 at 49.

Dragon Quest IX's impact was also felt on the hardware charts for the week. The DSi easily doubled its sales from the previous week, jumping from 47,000 to more than 118,000. All other systems--with the exception of the legacy DS Lite--saw their hardware sales slide week-over-week.

Looking at the non-Dragon Quest parts of the charts, evergreen Japanese hits like Wii Fit, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (Monster Hunter Freedom Unite in the US), and Pokemon Platinum continued to pad their stats, while more recent releases like Square Enix's action-RPG Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Level 5's puzzler Sloane to MacHale no Nazo no Story maintained momentum as well.

Week of July 6-12, 2009 Software: 1) Dragon Quest IX (DS) - 2,319,000 2) Wii Sports Resort (WII) - 103,000 3) Tomodachi Collection (DS) - 57,000 4) Boku no Natsuyasumi 4: Seitouchi Shounen Tanteidan, Boku to Himitsu no Chizu (PSP) - 24,000 5) Hatsune Miku: Project Diva (PSP) - 14,000 6) Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP) - 13,000 7) Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (DS) - 9,000 8) Wii Fit (Wii) - 9,000 9) Pokemon Platinum (DS) - 8,000 10) Sloane to MacHale no Nazo no Story (DS) - 7,000

Hardware: DSi - 118,202 PSP - 26,527 Wii - 22,141 DS Lite - 10,161 PS3 - 9,864 Xbox 360 - 3,561 PS2 - 3,508

Since most of these exercises require the balance board, Wii Fit Bundles are in high demand. The Wii Fit Bundle includes the game along with the Wii Balance Board.

Unless a pre-order of the Wii Fit Bundle was made, it's very difficult to locate the bundle in stores. Much like the Nintendo Wii Consoles, the bundles are sold out and very likely backordered for at least a few weeks. The demand for the game is understandable as it allows gamers from five years old to senior citizens to engage in activities that are not only fun, but also help get the blood flowing. Often times, the problem with exercising is that it feels too much like work. With the Wii Fit, you can have fun and exercise at the same time. With many people struggling to find time to exercise, the Wii Fit allows users to spend twenty to thirty minutes a day participating in engaging and enjoyable activities.

Unless you happen to run across a store that just got Wii Fit bundles in stock, it will likely be hard to start your training program for a few weeks. That's where online shopping comes in.
