wiiremote nunchuck motionplus Wii Remote to be an Endangered Species in 2010

According the Telegraph (UK), Pixmania’s list of electronic items that will be “endangered species” by the end of 2010 included the Wii Remote.  Their reasoning is because of new technology, such as Microsoft’s Project Natal, which they believe will take over.  Apparently, the world would rather not hold anything in their hand(s) when playing video games.

Full list:

2010’s most endangered technologies:
1. DVD players
2. Fax machine
3. Analogue TV
4. The landline phone
5. Mobile phone charger
6. Wii-mote
7. Sat Navs
8. Dongle
9. The computer mouse
10. Chip and pin credit cards

Wii | Wii Sports Resort sells 6.97 million, Wii Sports tops 50 million

http://www.google.com/

Nintendo's latest minigame compilation debuts to nearly septuple-platinum sales.

Yesterday, Nintendo reported that revenues declined 34.5 percent to ¥548.1 billion ($6.0 billion) during the April-September period of its current fiscal year. And while part of that decline could be attributed to a weakness in the hardware market, Nintendo also saw a dip in its global software sales for the Wii and DS. The publisher's console game sales fell from 81.4 million to 76.2 million during the six-month window, and handheld titles slipped from 85 million to 71.1 million units.

OK boy! Now, bring it back!

Still, Nintendo did see a few wins during the period. In a supplementary to its earnings report released today, Nintendo said that six Wii games and six DS games sold more than a million units during the six-month period. Notably, Nintendo said that one of its tent-pole releases for the year, Wii Sports Resort, has sold 6.97 million units since its June domestic debut and July overseas launch.

Wii Sports Resort's predecessor also continued its strong run. Sold as a stand-alone game in Japan but packed in with Nintendo's console in North America, Wii Sports shifted 4.83 million units during the April-September window, bringing its lifetime total to 50.5 million units. Nintendo's other top releases for the period by units sold were Wii Fit with 4.28 million (22.5 million LTD), Mario Kart Wii with 2.96 million (18.4 million LTD), Wii Fit Plus with 2.13 million (which launched in October), and Wii Play with 1.45 million (24.4 million LTD).

Pokemon led the way on Nintendo's DS sales chart. Pokemon Platinum sold 2.63 million units globally during the period, bringing its lifetime total to 6.39 million units, while Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver debuted to 2.27 million units. New Super Mario Bros. shifted 1.49 million units during the period, bumping its grand total to 19.9 million units, and Mario Kart DS sold an additional 1.48 million units, bringing its lifetime sales to 16.1 million. Available only in Japan, Tomodachi Collection launched to 1.45 million units, and Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box premiered with 1.26 million units.

Nintendo Wii Wii Sports Resort - 6.97 million (6.97 million LTD) Wii Sports - 4.83 million (50.5 million LTD) Wii Fit - 4.28 million (22.5 million LTD) Mario Kart Wii - 2.96 million (18.4 million LTD) Wii Fit Plus - 2.13 million (2.13 million LTD) Wii Play - 1.45 million (24.4 million LTD)

Wii | Link and Mario star in Nintendo's Q4 EU lineup

http://www.google.com/

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Wii Fit Plus all due out in time for Christmas.

With Nintendo's profits having slid somewhat in recent times, the company could do with a strong lineup of products for this holiday season. It seems this is the case, with Nintendo set to bring out the big guns in this year's autumn/winter software lineup, which places Mario and Link firmly in the spotlight.

Mario plays a big part in the Nintendo Christmas lineup.

Link will return for his second outing on the DS in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, which is due out on December 11. Boasting the same cel-shaded visual style as its predecessor, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks sees Link travel around a magical island featuring an equally magical locomotive. Spirit Tracks looks set to contain some of the great puzzles and dungeons the series is famous for, and with the previous title receiving rave reviews, hopes are high for this new Zelda entry.

Elsewhere on the DS, Mario and Luigi return in Bowser's Inside Story, which is due out on October 9. The game is set inside Bowser's stomach and differs from the usual Mario fare with its action RPG gameplay. Pokemon makes a comeback on November 20 with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky. As ever, players must try to capture those pesky Pokemon, and the game features more than 490 different types. Other highlights include Spore Hero Arena, Need for Speed Nitro, and Lego Indiana Jones 2, all of which are due out before Christmas.

On the Wii, Mario is the star once again as he leaps into action in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, due out November 20. Featuring four-player cooperative play, the game requires players to work together to solve platforming puzzles and access hidden areas. New Super Mario Bros. Wii also ranks players at the end of every level, based on the number of coins collected.

The endless stream of Wii Fit sales also looks set to continue with the launch of Wii Fit Plus on October 30, available with or without the balance board. Nintendo says it will feature new games, online functionality, and lower-impact exercises for senior citizens. Other highlights from the Wii lineup include Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquillity, Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, and F1 2009, all due out before the end of the year.

Wii | ChartSpot: August 2009

http://www.digg.com/

Madden, Wii Sports Resort, Batman stand atop console top 20, while the Sims and World of Warcraft duke it out for PC supremacy...again.

Last Thursday, the NPD Group released its August US game-industry figures, which showed a 25 percent decrease in game software sales. (Overall, the US game industry decreased by 16 percent.) Now, the company has released its charts of the top 20 PC and non-PC games for the month, which revealed a broader picture of how publishers' latest wares stacked up.

Gamers weren't too keen on tackling Madden on the Wii.

As shown in the non-PC top 10 released with the industry figures, Madden NFL 10 was the best-selling game of August, followed by Wii Sports Resort and Batman Arkham Asylum. The top 20 showed the Wii version of the football sim--which sold only 66,600 copies, landed in 17th place--with the PSP edition of the game nowhere to be found. Other underwhelming debuts included Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box (DS, 16th), and Wolfenstein (360, 18th).

Over on the PC chart, the usually tit-for-tat Sims-vs.-World of Warcraft battle for supremacy saw the Sims 3 prevail over the Wrath of the Lich King WOW expansion pack for the top slot. However, the chart was shaken up by the casual compilation Mumbo Jumbo Assortment, which came in fourth at an average retail price of $3. Right behind it was another newcomer, the Final Fantasy XI: Starter Pack, which had an even lower price--$1.99 at retail, but a $0.00 average cost, according to NPD. The pack lets players install the venerable massively multiplayer online role-playing game and play for a month gratis.

Wolfenstein's sales were a shadow of the series' onetime popularity.

Finally, as previously reported, Activision and Raven Software's reboot of the classic id Software franchise Wolfenstein fared poorly with the original's core PC audience. The game sold barely more than 17,000 units on the PC, good enough for a seventh-place finish on the PC charts. On all platforms, the game sold just 106,000 units in the US in the five days after its August 25 release.

http://www.yahoo.com/Madden, Wii Sports Resort, Batman stand atop console top 20, while the Sims and World of Warcraft duke it out for PC supremacy...again. Uni of Houston offers Wii Fit based gym classes

http://www.technorati.com/Wii and Wii Fit News Post subject : Uni of Houston offers Wii Fit based gym classesIn an effort to encourage students who might otherwise not go to gym classes, the University of Houston has introduced Wii Fit based classesThis is a great, and pragmatic, approach to gym classes. If like me you were put off sports by school gym lessons, the idea of an alternative that's actually fun is very appealing. It might not be as physically rigorous as a five mile run, or an hour pumping iron, but it's sure as hell a lot more fun. more ... Statistics : 1 Post || 13 Views Post by paul Yahoo

Wii | $100 Wii Fit Plus bundle arrives Oct. 4

http://www.google.com/Nintendo's expanded fitness sim offering 21 new activities, customizable routines later this year; stand-alone disc running for $19.99. Released in May 2008, Wii Fit has proven to be one of Nintendo's evergreen juggernauts. The third-best-selling non-PC game in the US in 2008 with 4.53 million units sold, Nintendo's fitness sim was the top seller during the first half of 2009, according to the NPD Group. Mix-and-match routines are now a go. Today, Nintendo announced that an expanded edition of the game, Wii Fit Plus, will be available in North America on October 4. The publisher also confirmed that Wii Fit Plus will replace all current Wii Fit bundles, which include the Wii Balance Board accessory, and will retail for $99.99--$10 more than the previous package. Though rumors had indicated a $30 price tag, Nintendo also confirmed that a stand-alone Wii Fit Plus disc will sell for $19.99. Explaining the inflated price tag, Nintendo notes that Wii Fit Plus will include all of the original title's activities, as well as 15 new balance games and six additional strength-training exercises. Wii Fit Plus will also let players customize their workout routines, a feature that drew criticism due to its absence in the original. Official trailer for "EA Sports Active: More Workouts"

http://www.yahoo.com/Wii and Wii Fit News Post subject : Official trailer for "EA Sports Active: More Workouts"I've been a regular EA Sports Active user for the last few months, and I'm loving it. It squeezes in much more exercise into my time than original Wii Fit (although I'm hopeful that Wii Fit Plus's routines will be an improvement).Having said that, Active does have its flaws: the shortness of the 30 day challenge, the relatively small number of exercises, and the lack of proper warm-up stretches. Now a trailer for the imaginatively titled "EA Sports Active: More Workouts", expected in November, has been released:It looks like a great improvement on the original. I certainly looking forward to more exercises that are not quite so obsessed with my my thighs (I'm getting bored of lunges and squats), and including stretches and warm-ups fixes something that shouldn't have been missing in the first place.Roll on November, with the release of Wii Fit Plus due around the same time, it will be a good time for all you fitness fans, and just in time for all that holiday season turkey :) more ... Wii | Analysts mixed following sickly July sales

http://www.google.com/EEDAR's Jesse Divnich and NPD's Anita Frazier weigh in on 29% monthly decline--and whether the industry can pull out of its slump before year's end. The industry-tracking NPD Group released its US game sales figures for July 2009 today, and the numbers were down 29 percent overall. Game accessory sales were the best-performing segment of the industry, and even they were down 12 percent year-over-year to $130.97 million, off from $149.49 million. Divnich says Guitar Hero has peaked, and Activision knows it. Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich told GameSpot that the numbers reinforced the notion that the recession has begun directly impacting the industry. The analyst had expected software sales to be down 10 to 18 percent anyway based on historical sales trends like prior month sales and review scores, but the actual 26 percent drop suggests that some larger force is hindering the industry. While Nintendo's evergreen titles like Wii Fit and Electronic Arts' EA Sports Active made the month's top 10 sales chart, Divnich said it was the casual segment of the market that posted the most disappointing results. He pointed to Wii Fit's steep month-over-month drop, selling just 164,300 copies after last month's much stronger 271,600. And while EA Sports Active's 96,800 was enough to close out the top 10, Divnich said it was the first time this year a title failed to reach 100,000 yet still managed to make the top 10. NPD analyst Anita Frazier held out hope that the rest of the year could turn the sales trend around, pointing to this month's launch of Madden NFL 10 as a game that could spur sales and looking ahead to The Beatles: Rock Band, Halo 3: ODST, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Even so, she said the industry would need to be up 11 percent for the rest of the year in order to break even. "Of all genres, the music/dance genre has suffered the greatest declines this year, with nearly $390 million less revenues than the same time period last year," Frazier said. Divnich acknowledged the slide, but didn't see it as a necessarily ill omen for this holiday season's glut of rhythm games, including DJ Hero, Lego Rock Band, and Band Hero. "Probably the single greatest factor that drives sales in the music category is marketing," Divnich said. "This is an audience that doesn't go to GameSpot every day and the best way to reach them is traditional brute force marketing. ... I think Activision has realized that the category has reached its peak and they have one last season to drive this category. The genre's going to be around forever, but we have to face the facts that it has peaked for the time being." Looking ahead to the August sales figures, Divnich said Madden NFL 10 sales could be a big plus for the industry, even if they're flat year-over-year. His optimism extended to the remainder of the year, saying a strong lineup of games like Guitar Hero 5, The Beatles: Rock Band, and Halo 3: ODST should have the industry in better shape. "It's not too bad," Divnich said of the current five-month sales slide. "We have to keep in mind the industry has grown over 70 percent in the last three years. So we shouldn't sniff at the fact that we're down a little bit this year."
