Wii | Analysts mixed following sickly July sales

http://www.google.com/EEDAR's Jesse Divnich and NPD's Anita Frazier weigh in on 29% monthly decline--and whether the industry can pull out of its slump before year's end. The industry-tracking NPD Group released its US game sales figures for July 2009 today, and the numbers were down 29 percent overall. Game accessory sales were the best-performing segment of the industry, and even they were down 12 percent year-over-year to $130.97 million, off from $149.49 million. Divnich says Guitar Hero has peaked, and Activision knows it. Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich told GameSpot that the numbers reinforced the notion that the recession has begun directly impacting the industry. The analyst had expected software sales to be down 10 to 18 percent anyway based on historical sales trends like prior month sales and review scores, but the actual 26 percent drop suggests that some larger force is hindering the industry. While Nintendo's evergreen titles like Wii Fit and Electronic Arts' EA Sports Active made the month's top 10 sales chart, Divnich said it was the casual segment of the market that posted the most disappointing results. He pointed to Wii Fit's steep month-over-month drop, selling just 164,300 copies after last month's much stronger 271,600. And while EA Sports Active's 96,800 was enough to close out the top 10, Divnich said it was the first time this year a title failed to reach 100,000 yet still managed to make the top 10. NPD analyst Anita Frazier held out hope that the rest of the year could turn the sales trend around, pointing to this month's launch of Madden NFL 10 as a game that could spur sales and looking ahead to The Beatles: Rock Band, Halo 3: ODST, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Even so, she said the industry would need to be up 11 percent for the rest of the year in order to break even. "Of all genres, the music/dance genre has suffered the greatest declines this year, with nearly $390 million less revenues than the same time period last year," Frazier said. Divnich acknowledged the slide, but didn't see it as a necessarily ill omen for this holiday season's glut of rhythm games, including DJ Hero, Lego Rock Band, and Band Hero. "Probably the single greatest factor that drives sales in the music category is marketing," Divnich said. "This is an audience that doesn't go to GameSpot every day and the best way to reach them is traditional brute force marketing. ... I think Activision has realized that the category has reached its peak and they have one last season to drive this category. The genre's going to be around forever, but we have to face the facts that it has peaked for the time being." Looking ahead to the August sales figures, Divnich said Madden NFL 10 sales could be a big plus for the industry, even if they're flat year-over-year. His optimism extended to the remainder of the year, saying a strong lineup of games like Guitar Hero 5, The Beatles: Rock Band, and Halo 3: ODST should have the industry in better shape. "It's not too bad," Divnich said of the current five-month sales slide. "We have to keep in mind the industry has grown over 70 percent in the last three years. So we shouldn't sniff at the fact that we're down a little bit this year." Official trailer for "EA Sports Active: More Workouts"

http://www.google.com/Wii and Wii Fit News Post subject : Official trailer for "EA Sports Active: More Workouts"I've been a regular EA Sports Active user for the last few months, and I'm loving it. It squeezes in much more exercise into my time than original Wii Fit (although I'm hopeful that Wii Fit Plus's routines will be an improvement).Having said that, Active does have its flaws: the shortness of the 30 day challenge, the relatively small number of exercises, and the lack of proper warm-up stretches. Now a trailer for the imaginatively titled "EA Sports Active: More Workouts", expected in November, has been released:It looks like a great improvement on the original. I certainly looking forward to more exercises that are not quite so obsessed with my my thighs (I'm getting bored of lunges and squats), and including stretches and warm-ups fixes something that shouldn't have been missing in the first place.Roll on November, with the release of Wii Fit Plus due around the same time, it will be a good time for all you fitness fans, and just in time for all that holiday season turkey :) more ... "Static bike" controller and cycling game

Wii and Wii Fit News Post subject : "Static bike" controller and cycling gameThese slides have popped up on a number of message boards in the last few days. They appear to be Nintendo marketing slides showing a new pedalling based controller for the Wii.One of the repeated criticisms of Wii Fit has been that it isn't so good for cardio-vascular exercise, adding what is effectively a small static bike should plug that particular whole. It will be interesting to see how well the bike works, especially how much resistance it gives you. The slide says there will be "60 different game modes" which sounds like the typical exaggeration one expects from marketing departments, I can't see there really being 60 different ways of pedalling a bike :) However, this is going to be an interesting improvement over traditional exercise bikes, where the best you can do it watch a bit of TV while you pedal. more ... Redbox Now Renting Video Games

redbox_video_games

If you are a fan of renting movies from Redbox, but have always wished they offered video games too, you are now in luck…if you live around Reno, that is.  Redbox is now offering video games for $2 per night in select locations in Reno.  Hopefully, this goes well, and they implement all over the country.

Dsi takes over PSPgo website

Go punch up pspgo.co.uk . That’s not exactly the product being being flogged there, is it. A Chinese registrant picked up the domain name in late April, and has plastered it with a replica of the DSi’s product page.

Now, as Destructoid points out, there ain’t no page forpspgo.com, so maybe Sony really doesn’t give a crap here. It looks like this guy went squatting on a domain he thought they’d want, and has gotten really spiteful now that no money has changed hands.

Doubtful the number of people who deliberately type in “pspgo.co.uk” and visit this site – as opposed to going to a correct page via a Google search – troubles Sony that much. But it is kind of a cheap shot.

Wii Fit Book Now Available

As some of you may or may not know, I had a fairly large “book deal” a few years back after I gained international attention as the “Wii Workout Guy“. I lost 9lbs. playing Wii Sports and dubbed it my Wii Sports Experiment. I appeared on countless Television programs, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and all over the internet. The experiment caught the eye of a literary agent in NYC and along with a ghost writer from Men’s Health Magazine we got a publisher. Everything was a go, but the publisher wanted Nintendo’s blessing before they put out such a book. After a few weeks we finally got word back from Nintendo of Japan that they could in no way sponsor, endorse, or allow use of their intellectual property (images/logos). The book was scrapped.

I never count my chickens before they hatch, so I didn’t mind. Disappointed? Sure, who wouldn’t be. I’ve been a Nintendo fan since 1985 and I still am today. In fact, Nintendo did fly me to NYC (from Philadelphia… it was a 30 minute flight) to be one of the first in the world to try out Wii Fit. Reggie and Nintendo also gave me a shout out during that years E3 when they announced the Wii Fit.

I went on to do a follow-up to my “Wii Sports Experiment” with my “Wii Fit Experiment“, and as you can imagine now there are 100’s of people who have lost weight playing Wii Fit, EA Sports Active, etc… and the whole “Exertainment” gaming industry has exploded. At any rate I’ve partnered up with Amanda Dexter to help her promote her Wii Fit book, so have a look/see:

Wii | Iwata rules out Wii price cut, next console a long way off

Nintendo president says Wii Music, Animal Crossing disappoint with 2.65 million, 3.38 million sales; Vitality Sensor due in 2010; Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. target 10 million units.

In light of declining Wii sales, analysts have been projecting a price cut for the system for months. However, Nintendo has stood its ground, refusing to drop the price on its latest console, which has retailed in the US for $249.99 since its launch in November 2006.

Still waiting for a price drop to pick one up?

In a transcript of Nintendo's post-earnings conference call translated by GameSpot, Iwata said there were no plans for price cuts at the moment, saying that price hasn't been the reason for declining hardware sales. Instead, he pointed to weakness in the system's recent lineup of titles. For example, in the same quarter that Nintendo launched Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii last year, the publisher had no major releases.

Nintendo expects that situation to be remedied shortly, as the company's slate for the rest of the year is being forecast favorably against last year's launches. Iwata said that last year's big Wii launches in the back half of the year--Wii Music and Animal Crossing: City Folk--failed to live up to expectations, selling 2.65 million and 3.38 million copies worldwide, respectively. By contrast, the publisher expects its 2009 lineup--the recently released Wii Sports Resort and the upcoming Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii--to each surpass the 10 million units sold worldwide milestone in its current fiscal year (12 months ending March 31, 2010).

Iwata also shed a little light on the company's decision to pursue the Wii Vitality Sensor pulse-monitoring peripheral. He said the company likes to challenge itself with such unproven concepts at least every two years and explained the reasoning behind the sensor's E3 unveiling.

"At this year's E3, there was a danger that we were being perceived as a company that creates many sequels," Iwata said, adding, "As a time frame, we would like to bring this to [retail] not too late into next year, but as mentioned before, in software, the last bit of effort is very important so we'd like to withhold an exact time frame."

Looking beyond the Wii, Iwata answered a question about the next generation of Nintendo console hardware and how it won't be coming any time soon.

"We [don't believe] we are currently approaching the end of a cycle and must start thinking about releasing the next piece of hardware at all," Iwata said. "And so we are not setting a determination on how long this console should remain active. Of course, research into hardware is ongoing, and we are developing the next console. When we determine that the ideas of our employees match the flow of the world, and we can provide the appropriate amount of stock at a reasonable price, that is when we can start talking about when to release the next piece of hardware. But we feel that this is not something that will happen at any time in the near future."

Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles – Best Wii graphics?

Compared to what’s possible on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it’s easy to knock the graphical potential of the Wii. But Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles producer Masachika Kawata wants to prove the skeptics wrong. At Comic-Con, he told G4 a currently unrevealed stage in Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles pushes the Wii to places gamers probably didn’t think it could go.

“I think it’s perfectly possible to create great horror presentation on the Wii. In fact, unfortunately, we’re not able to show it off just yet, but very shortly we’re hoping to show off a en stage from a new scenario and I think when fans get a look at that they will really be asking themselves, is this really on the Wii? Actually, we went to Nintendo’s offices earlier on this month to show them this new stage and they were really, really impressed by it and impressed by what we were able to get out of the Wii.”

Race is on to evolve the ultimate Mario

Programmers have been challenged to build an artificial intelligence that learns how to master a version of Super Mario

AI researchers have been set the target of mastering another complex game deeply rooted in human culture: the Nintendo classic Super Mario Bros.

As well as providing a chance for teams to engage in a bit of healthy competition, the contest could help make future computer games more interesting, co-organiser Julian Togelius at the IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark, told New Scientist.

“I’m interested in creating learning or evolving software that can make games more fun, or easier to produce,” he says.
The mod father

Togelius and colleague Sergey Karakovskiy’s contest challenges entrants to develop software that can learn to master Mario by playing it over and over; much as generations of gamers have learned to play the game in bedrooms the world over.

The pair hope it will bring together advocates of different ideas about how to make software learn; those who mutate and evolve their code to improve it and those who prefer more established, mathematical techniques to spot and learn relationships. “Having a direct shoot-out like this is a good way to compare them,” says Togelius.

Evolving a better Mario would typically involve creating a population of programs each able to play the game, but in ways that differ slightly from each other. Software would pit them all against the game and combine elements of the most successful to “father” a new generation of Marios, each with some random mutations of their own included.

Many rounds of this automated process can create programs well adapted to a particular task, just like a species evolving to better fit and exploit its environment.

Scribblenauts – Flash Game Idea

Get Adobe Flash player

I got a little bored today and quickly whipped this together. It took about 15 minutes, but if you guys want to help out we can make it into something (I’m not sure what). The first step is to create EVERY vector graphic we’d like to see in the game. Right now I just added a few for starters:

“car”
“ds”
“apple”
“banana”

If you’d like to add something, just post a link to a vector (.eps or .swf) version of it in the comments and I’ll add it.

Right now the “game” simply lets you interact with the object by allowing you to drag and toss them around, maybe if this becomes popular enough we can start adding game aspects to it, who knows….
